What Are Research Use Only (RUO) Peptides?

What 'research use only' means for peptides in the UK, who can buy RUO materials, and why suppliers cannot give human-use guidance.

"Research use only" (RUO) is a label applied to materials intended solely for laboratory investigation. An RUO peptide is sold as a chemical reagent for in-vitro experiments — cell cultures, receptor assays, analytical method development — not as a medicine, supplement, food or cosmetic.

What RUO means in practice

  • The material has not been assessed or authorised by the MHRA, EMA or FDA for any clinical or consumer use.
  • No therapeutic, dosing or safety claims are made by the supplier.
  • The buyer takes responsibility for safe, lawful handling, storage and disposal.
  • Materials must not be administered to humans or animals.

Why suppliers cannot give human-use advice

A responsible RUO supplier cannot advise on dosage, administration, "cycles" or mixing for personal use. Doing so would present the product as a medicinal product, which is regulated under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012. At Port Peptides we will answer questions about identity, purity, analytical documentation, storage and shipping — but never about human use.

How to judge an RUO peptide supplier

  • Batch-specific certificates of analysis (HPLC and mass spectrometry).
  • Clear molecular data: formula, molecular weight, sequence.
  • Consistent RUO labelling across the website, packaging and invoices.
  • No health claims, before-and-after imagery or dosing charts.

Research use only

All Port Peptides products are supplied strictly for in-vitro laboratory research and analytical purposes. They are not intended for human consumption, medical use or veterinary use, and are not drugs, foods, supplements or cosmetics.

Product guidance: we operate exclusively as a research-material supplier and are therefore unable to provide guidance relating to human use, including dosage, administration, preparation or mixing instructions.
